Books about NLP: Introduction to NLP

Note from Ron: I think "Heart of the Mind: Engaging Your Inner Power to Change With Neuro-Linguistic Programming" by Connirae Andreas is a great starting point. She was one of the persons who trained me in preparation for my NLP certification program.

THE ELEMENTS OF NLP

For people who are very new to NLP, then this brief introductory book by Carol Harris is a great place to start.

The Book has three concise sections:

  • Section 1, describes the history background and general models of NLP.

  • Section 2, highlights applications of NLP in areas of personal growth, social relationships and Business

  • Section 3, a reference section with plenty of resources for further information.

Overall, very thorough and easy to read.

THE PRINCIPLES OF NLP

This book, written by Joseph O'Connor and Ian McDermott uses the four "pillars" of NLP to familiarize the reader with NLP. The four "pillars" are:

  • Rapport

  • Outcome

  • Acuity

  • Flexibility

Although not as structured as the above mentioned book, this book focuses on many of the NLP "presuppositions" and contains many clear explanations and applications of NLP techniques.

The foreword was written by Robert Dilts and there is a brief, but useful reference section at the back.

HEART OF THE MIND

One of the attractions to NLP is the many effective "techniques" and "processes" that can help people become more resourceful and effective.  This book contains many different (and powerful) approaches to:

  • Overcoming stage fright

  • Becoming more independent in relationships

  • Healing Trauma

  • Eliminating phobic responses

  • Parenting Positively

  • Asserting yourself respectfully

  • Resolving grief

And many more.  This book does not have to be read from cover to cover and serves as an excellent reference for new ways of approaching and responding to life's problems.

SOLUTIONS: ENHANCING LOVE, SEX, AND RELATIONSHIPS

One of the several excellent and practical NLP books authored by Leslie Cameron-Bandler provides NLP approaches to relating to and loving others.

This book contains excellent, clear explanations of:

  • Rapport

  • Representational systems (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)

  • Eye accessing cues

  • Well formed outcomes

  • Anchoring

  • Reframing

  • Meta Model

What distinguishes this book is the jargon free explanations of many of the foundation models and techniques of NLP.  Very highly recommended.

KNOW HOW: GUIDED PROGRAMS FOR INVENTING YOUR OWN BEST FUTURE

Although not specifically a book about NLP, this volume offers many excellent patterns modeled from gifted people using the methodology of NLP.

Some of the patterns include:

  • The Five Fundamentals of Success

  • Effective Eating Strategies

  • Motivation to Exercise

  • Modifying substance behaviors (Drugs, alcohol, smoking)

  • Fulfilling Sex

  • The process of Loving

  • Parenting Positively

Very Useful even for people not interested in NLP.
