Recovery from Childhood Abuse
Symptoms in adult life: depression, anger, taking excessive risks, sexual compulsions,
alcohol dependence, drug dependence, failure to succeed in school or work, or an inability
to establish healthy long term relationships.
All of these can all be caused by
verbal,
physical, mental, or sexual abuse in childhood. If anyone in the family in which you grew
up was addicted to alcohol or other drugs, or
if there were serious anger issues, you grew up
in an abusive environment.
One kind of abuse that is often overlooked
is neglect. This is may occur when a child is
unwanted or unplanned and is considered a burden on the family. The needs of the child are placed as the last priority in
family plans and finances. Often neglect is subtle but becomes more
and more obvious when your childhood is discussed with a trained therapist.
Typical
comments from parents who have neglected their child sound like this:
"If
you had not been born our lives would be so much better! I could have gone to college and
we would be better off."
"We
don't have the money to buy your clothes. We spent it all on the other
children."
"Dinner, oh we forgot about you. We ate out. See if there are any left-overs
in the refrigerator."
The symptoms caused by childhood abuse
are
particularly well suited to being healed using recently discovered methods of
treatment.
